This is a project that explores the use of symbols in Jewish art and traditional objects. I used pomegranates, but you could use many other symbols, like trees, mountains, and much more!

Materials:

Oil pastels and/or crayons
Watercolor paint
Brushes
Mixed media or watercolor paper

Steps:

1) Start by drawing your version of the symbol. For a pomegranate, you will draw a circle with the “Crown” forms at the top. Use your oil pastels or crayons (or both!) to draw and create patterns.

2) Paint watercolor shapes and forms over the drawing you just made. Watch how the oil pastel or crayon resists the watercolor. Try to fill the entire page with color and design!
